Library of Congress Veterans History Project
The United States Congress introduced legislation to create the Veterans History Project (VHP) in 2000 as part of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. The Project unites diverse communities around a common purpose: collect, preserve, and make accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war.
The Veterans History Project has become the largest oral history archive in the nation, with over 68,000 collections, including audio and video taped interviews as well as original photographs, illustrations, letters, diaries, and other personal documents. Over 7,400 collections are entirely accessible online for viewing and research.
Across the country, MOAA members and chapters have participated in the Veterans History Project. In fact, Bob Patrick, 1st VP of the Mount Vernon Chapter and MVC VCOC Representative is the Director of the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress. He is encouraging all Virginia chapters to consider starting their own effort to collect the oral histories of their members or other veterans in their community. Our Virginia wartime veterans deserve being honored by having their stories preserved in the Library of Congress!
